At the end of the eight-year Tanzfonds Erbe programme of the German Federal Cultural Foundation with 60 realised individual projects, a series of events with an exhibition, performances, workshops and lectures will take place at the Akademie der Künste.
A look at the dance moderns of the 20th century shows how, in distinction to classical ballet and other movement traditions, new body images, choreographic concepts and levels of perception have been developed since the beginning of the century. They stand for emancipation, for liberation from gender roles and body images, for the dynamics of utopian awakenings and political appropriation, but also of resistance. Dancers such as Isadora Duncan, Mary Wigman, Gret Palucca, Jean Weidt or Valeska Gert have not only revolutionised dance as an art form, but have also fundamentally inspired the other arts and addressed the question of the political dimension in dance. It is a similar story with the awakenings of post-war modernism, with dance theatre in Germany, Butoh in Japan, modern and postmodern dance in the USA or contemporary dance in France and Belgium. The programme focuses on questions of the transmission of choreographic and dance knowledge between generations and thus also on the formation of contemporary dance repertoires. The possibilities of reconstructing historical works and their physical and performative transformation will also be explored.
